If I put an engine swap (300cc), can I take it on the freeway? (Cali)
Legally no. If you do a 300 swap, you are much better off not telling the DMV you swapped it. Cali sucks for stuff like this.

Illegally, sure, why not. I wouldn't, but people do it all the time. Before my Grom I had a 250 Supermoto, and I took it on the freeway now and then, but even on that I didn't feel very safe on it, and the majority of the miles under my belt over the last 20+ years is freeway riding (120 mile roundtrip commute).

DMV book in Calif states 150cc or bigger. If you went to court you would win on the 150cc clause if you have that size engine but lose on CARB since most BBK kit engine and after market exhaust system are sold as closed circuit use only meaning "race track only". Plus in Calif if registered as 125cc the courts will go by the registration information only because that is the DMV info and money you paid to register your grom on.

I think if you can keep up with traffic "BBK" kit and your grom is not to loud most cops/CHP will not bother you. I've ridden most Freeway around Northern Calif, Hwy 101, 237,85,87,880 and the cops leave you along if you are going with the flow of traffic, you would stand out if you are a big person riding a pint size motorcycle on the Freeway.

I drive on the highways all the time and occasionally on the freeway and have had no problems. Over 8000 miles on the odometer with about 90% of those miles at WOT. The engines are really tough in stock form. Different state laws may be limiting if that really matters to anyone. A Grom is no less safe than any other motorcycle traveling at the same speed with a competent driver. (there are many people who drive motorcycles that shouldn't be. JMO)

Believe the people who actually DO or have done what the original post asks.....the other opinions are fairly worthless other than for entertainment purposes.

I have done highway riding a few times no problems. Did more passing then cars passed me. Speed limit was 60mph and I was doing 65-72 to keep up with traffic. Aviod large trucks that's all.
How do you get that out of a Grom? I am lucky I can get 54 out of mine. That is on a straight stretch with no wind.

Do you tuck? Before I changed gearing, low to mid 50's was my top speed sitting bolt upright, but if I tucked I could climb into the 60's pretty easily, and I hit 67 fairly regularly on a good day. Now that I've changed my gearing, I don't know what my top speed is yet. Weather supposed to be nice finally, so I'll probably find out this week. Guessing it's low to maybe mid 60's now, but I get there much easier and faster. Totally worth the couple MPH on top for the faster and easier acceleration in 4th.

Being 120 pounds does wonders. At that speed is tucking obviously.

Put your head as low as possible and 90 degrees at the elbows!
I'll add, stay loose, set your derriere back in the seat, your back should be flat. Tuck your toes, ankles, knees and elbows in. Make sure your right foot is not touching the brake.

Depending on the stability of your bike and your skill level you may want to move your left hand off the bars and into the dead air zone over the tank (I hang my fingers over the left side of the front tank faring plastic thing, you can feel the lack of turbulence). With the same caveat in the last sentence, move your right hand in as far as you can while still being able to cover the front brake and hold the throttle open. DON'T TAKE YOUR LEFT HAND OFF THE BARS UNLESS YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THIS AND DRESSED APPROPRIATELY.

On a little bike the art of the tuck is as important as trail braking to the apex in corners.

Just hit 75 today! And no this was not down a big ass hill lol it was in the freeway, but pretty excited lol. Mods are kitaco clutch cover, Hindle exhaust, Tbolt cam, koso air filter w/ velocity stack (stock box), finbro ecu/pcx injector, 15/36 gearing, kitaco high flow oil pump and I think thats it. I regularly ride it on the freeway, almost every day 45 miles 1 way to work and 45 miles to school then about 15 miles home so over 100 miles a day almost all freeway crusing at about 65-70 mph here in CA. I know in CA at least "legally" you have to be above 150cc to ride on the freeway but I've passed many cops and motorcycle cops and said hey to them and haven't ever been stopped or hassled

I am envious of your top speed -- I get nowhere close to that fast, but my bike is pretty close to stock, and I am a bit heavy.

I generally avoid the freeways, but sometimes one really has no choice but to get on the freeway. I have asked around and looked online, but I cannot find any reports of riders being hassled by the cops solely for the engine displacement being slightly under 150cc -- providing the rider was not creating SOME OTHER ISSUE which really drew the attention of the police. I am willing to risk the rare possibility of a ticket for the heinous crime of my engine being too small!

I though it was legal on the highway in USA? Its registered as a full motorcycle here, not a scooter
Different states have different laws. In Florida you’re required to be at least 150cc to legally ride the interstate.

Furthest I ever ridden was 100miles on the interstate going anywhere between 70-80mph depending on traffic. Stopped once at around 70miles to get fuel since the light started flashing. Engine was still a 125, DCR cam, ported head, the typical stuff

I ride Hwy sometimes. Seems to be easier to stay at higher speeds with all the cars around me going 65-80. I can hit 78mph on the cluster but I'm down 1 in the front. Downhill fully tucked.

Mods: Chimera, Exhaust, finbro, PCX150, Kitaco case, removed oil spinner, takegawa high flow oil pump, my own porting on TB and manifold, Alum sprockets 14t and 34t, Michelin pilot pure,

I don't know why you would lie and tell them that it's not legal when it is.
Technically it depends on where you live, some states do have minimum displacement laws for the interstate. I don't think anyone would call you on it unless you were holding up traffic though.
