Yes I have been asking a lot of question as of late. I need good information so I can decide what this build is going to turn into. The biggest headache for me, is concerning the FI controller. I will not plan out anything major without deciding on a controller first.

In the mean time I decided to go for a "Stage I" build on my 2018 Grom. Nothing spectacular. Many have gone before me. Oh, my 18 Grom has 2 miles on it...

This week I have added a Chimera intake, EFIE and a Hindle exhaust with the DB killer installed.

Hindle came from Woodcraft at $353.94
Chimera from MotoMummy via Amazon at 132.49
EFIE from Eagle-Research at 35.00

I will also rate as to the difficulty of the install. x/10

Hindle - 2/10
Chimera - 2/10
EFIE - 2.5/10 IF no electrical or soldering skills 6/10

The install was fairly straight forward on the above items. I picked up my switched 12V from the tail light circuit. This EFIE only draws something like 100 milliamps. No problem in using any 12V switched source. Starting at 250ma.

Hindle was a breeze also. I even reused the exhaust gasket. Sounds nice with the DB killer installed. A little louder than my FMF on my 14 Grom, but not by much.

Chimera also an easy install. Used the same crankcase breather tube, just rerouted it.

Hindle says to let idle for 15 minutes to "break in" the packing. Then let cool completely. First I have heard of this. I am at the cool down stage now. Will go for a ride in a bit & see if that darn intake is too loud for my taste.

Parts on order for stage I

Koso BE030200 Black Top clamp amazon 40.71

The above parts is my stage I build.

I plan on going to the "Crawl" with this configuration. At the crawl I have heard that there will be many vendors for our Grom. At that time I hope to purchase (at a discount?) items for stage II. Stage II is either going to be major motor mods or major suspension mods, or a mixture of both. I have not decided. These forks have to be modded soon. I can even envision a stage III too!

Any whoo, if you have questions or comments feel free to drop them below!

Stage III

Ok, first piece of the puzzle ordered. An aluminum swing arm. I wanted bearings. Rubber bushings are a no no with suspension. We all know that. No use to upgrade a shock until you have the bearings figured out. BrianS, from a post I read back in '14 stated he was going to charge 180-220 for a bearing install. I prolly could have figured it out much cheaper, as I have a lathe & press and a micrometer. But hey this is 160 shipped to my feet. No need to bang my head against a wall for a couple bux. Plus the aluminum will look zoot capri! Form & function. Got to love that!

GROM STAGE III Part II

$910 Worth of suspension goodies ordered from Hard Racing.

Give me something to do this weekend while it is raining!
Worth saying again...suspension is the KEY to unlocking the Grom's full potential! I personally went for the RacingBros offerings front and rear, and could not be happier! Just waiting on some track time to dial it in more than I can achieve on the street.

Btw...NICE find w/ the swingarm...may have to pick one up, as I've been looking for a bearing-ed swingarm forever!
If I remember right the braces-ed swing arms where a lot stronger than the non-brace. These style of swing arms were sold back in 2014-15 time frame but it did not have the bearings setup. These look nice but I would still go for the braces-ed ones just for strength.

Interesting, that swingarm looks pretty nice.
If you look at the other swingarms for the Grom from that link, you will notice that most are labeled as "This product is no longer in stock". My gut tells me that there was a run of them & when they sell out that is it. This is just a gut feeling though.

On paper this swingarm is a steal. Especially considering that it has bearings. Normally I would have made a post & asked peeps opinion. For 160 bux I felt like I couldn't go wrong.

We shall see, as it is on its way.

I was about to order one of those before totaling my bike. Looking forward to your thoughts as it is on my parts list for the next build.

That's the impression that site gave me as well. Which is disappointing, b/c the Black Braced swingarm is exactly what I'm looking for.
Shock & fork Kit came in today. I have always received fast shipping from Hard Racing. Waiting on the swingarm from the UK to begin installation.

Ordered a RAM mount for my cell phone. I am concerned that I will not be able to read the phone in the sunlight. I have enough problems reading the phone when it is in my hands & I can move it to & fro. Should be interesting. A DG1 may be in my future.

Also ordered a USB mount to charge the phone. I do not see how the stock charging system and battery will keep up with all the electrical items I am adding. Time will tell i guess.

Additionally, somebody mentioned in a post somewhere on this forum (SolidJohnny?), that I ought to contact Hindle about the QC on the bung that is on their exhaust. After a couple emails back & forth and a couple pics sent, Sue at Hindle, is going to replace the exhaust. Even sent a return label for the faulty one. That is good customer service. Kudos to them. And thanks Johnny for the idea, if that was you.

Also ordered valve adjusting wrenches & gauges. If you are gonna work on these machines, ya gotta have the correct tools.

Can anybody suggest a cheap good flywheel/magneto removing tool? I see them all over fleabay for 32 bux. Cheaper elsewhere?

I have the oil slinger nut removal tool, going to have the valve feeler gauge & wrenches and looking for a magneto puller. Any other specialized tools I need to split the cases? I have never needed a case puller/separator, so lets leave that off the list for now.

I have been thinking of a 5 speed tranny lately and trying to find the pros when coupled with a BBK. For the life of me I cannot come up with any. My assumption is that the wider spacing of the 4sp. will be ok with the BBK. Now if the 5sp. had a taller 5th gear we would have something.

ALTHOUGH, I suppose that with a taller final drive, the 5 speed may come back into play. I see several posts where the BBK motors are running a 16T front sprocket. Quite a bit of a jump from my 14T. Maybe I need to rethink this 5 speed. Will the 4sp. pull the taller gearing with a BBK of 180ish cc's? What say you?

Enough ramblings for now.

WV,
can you elaborate on the issue with the Hindle exhaust? I just got a Hindle myself, but I am a ways off from ever installing an O2 sensor.....still, I would like to keep the option open. Is there an issue I should be looking into, for future consideration?

Parts are coming in left & right.

Installed the Ohlins fork kit today. Had a little issue with cooking the loctite & the lug was not bottomed out on the tube. Caused me a tad of concern, until I took it apart & found the error of my ways. It is "good in the hood" now.

Ram mount is mounted. Seems like a secure mount. Review coming up in a later post.

I would like to take a moment to tell you about my ABBA Stand. I have inserts for 3 of my bikes, including the Grom. Handy little gadget. Not so handy for my swingarm install (whenever it gets here) because it mounts to the swingarm bolt. Other than that. for 300 toads or there abouts, I highly recommend this stand. No I am not affiliated with Abba what so ever. I do like their music tho. :music:

As I stated in my last post, I installed the Ohlins fork kit on Saturday. Been raining on & off here on Sunday, so I decided to install the shock, even if the swingarm has not made it from the UK yet. Installation was pretty much straight forward, with the exception of the rezzi mounting bracket. Hard Racing did tell me it would not work with the 18 and the kitty cat clutch cover. He thought it could be modified though. He is correct. A little grinding (a lot actually) and it fits like a glove. I was also informed that the rezzi gets in the way of adding oil. Correct on that point also. Either a narrow funnel or removal of the rezzi is the order of the day.

Since I had the bodywork off, I also installed a USB port. Also fairly straight forward, altho a PITA 'cause I had to remove the left side grip & controls to get the mounting ring to where I wanted it. All in all, a very sano install.

In the afternoon it cleared up enough to put some miles on the new additions. Mini5 & Ohlins as well as the RAM mount.

I could tell the difference in the suspension immediately. Just climbing on, the suspension was held up higher in the stroke due to the better spring rates. I was expecting the ride to be on the harsh side. My road, to get to the main highway, is an old tar & chipped affair that has compacted over the years, into broken & pot holed tarmac. I was surprised it had a better ride overall on this surface too. Much better controlled dampning and due to better spring rates, held up higher in the stroke for more travel available for the nasties. Is it worth 800 bux? I think the more you weigh (anything over 150ish), the more that it is worth it. I weigh 175ish after a massive #2, and I give it 2 thumbs up. Or if you have a BBK and you are going faster & shoving it harder into turns, it does not take long to over ride the stock suspension. Or the stock brakes. Brakes are the next item on the chopping block.

RAM mount. Works as expected. Solid as a stone, even on my poor road. I did not use the silicone strappie thingee either. Good stuff.

The mini5 software is almost impossible to read in the daylight though. The biggest cell I have, on the home screen, using the AFR, can be barely seen in the day time. Any other cell or information on the home screen, forget it. Not happy with that. Other than using the DG1 display, which might have the same issue, I don't know if anything will work in the day light.

As far as programming and using the Mini5, a steep learning curve was to be expected. After watching Hard Racing's video, I dived in & started swiping. After a few minutes, the Grom was purring at 13.3 AFR. I still do not know what the hell I am doing, but the motor has not seized yet! LOL

I am toying around with the idea of picking up another stock engine & modding that with a BBK in the very near future. Can someone tell me if the '14 to '18 engines are interchangeable? My concern stems from the fact, from what I have read, that the '18 is more different than previous models. As long as the electrics are plug & play, I think it would be good to go.

Thanks for reading...

You should be fine building up a motor from a first generation. Just make sure you install a 2nd gen stator to it. I'm 99% sure all the hard parts are the same.

Rebuilt my 2014 engine with 2016-17 case and there was Zero issues, all the 14 parts fit. I did upgrade the transmission to Takegawa 5 speed and also upgraded the crank to Kitaco HD crank and rod. The bearings were updated to Hy-brid ceramic bearings and also the stator and rectifier was upgraded to the 2016-17. I had to buy new Crank Case since my BBK engine sent a connecting rod thru the case.

Cisco,

When you said the you used a 16-17 case, which case do you mean? Centercase? Clutch or stator?

So a SF stator is needed. Hummmmm....

Thanks guys!
Swingarm Snafu

So my Swingarm came in today. I thought it came from the UK, but actually it came from Belgium. Motorkit.com

After unpacking it and fondling, it seems we have problems.

1. It did not come with any chain adjusters
2. No angle brackets or bolts to mount the splash guard.
3. No bushings to mount the swingarm to the frame.

Sent an email to MOTORKIT and hope they respond in a timely fashion.

I am not so sure that the bushings required to mount the swingarm to the frame are to be taken off the stock swingarm. Yes the rubber bushings. I cannot confirm this. DO not feel like taking things apart to measure. I do not know what the OD of the rubber bushing is at this time.

I am trying to source bushings from pivot works to do the job. A tad under 17mm ID of the needle bearing and it is my guess the ID of the bushing will have to be 12mm, which is the OD of the pivot bolt (guessing). That makes a bushing 12 ID x 17 OD x 45mm long.

After finding this video of a kepspeed swingarm, I am missing quite a bit of hardware.

Sent them another e mail & we shall see what happens.

This is a pic of what I received.

EDIT: Received an email from Motorkit.com stating that they are sending the missing parts.

EDIT 2: I am thinking of picking up an underbraced swingarm from the same manufacturer, but from a different vendor. I know I can sell this one to my buddy. I will see once my parts come in & see how this fits around the pivot point. IF this works, the price cannot be beat.

Both half crank case where the transmission and crank sits in, I also installed hybrid ceramic bearings for the transmission which is 4 bearings, I did not add the crank ceramic bearings which is 2. The stator and rectifier is a plug and play unit and only thing you have to worry about is to make sure you order the correct bearing support for the flywheel side mod bearing update since there's a difference in mounting the bearing to the flywheel cover.

The older 2014 clutch side cover and flywheel cover works on the new 2017 case.

Only problem is when you order a new crank case there is no S/N on the case so you can either stamp in your old s/n or leave it blank.

Ordered the crank case R and L side from BikeBandit about $113 and $132 plus shipping
I was looking for a shorter throw throttle tube. I seen the DIY posts, and a few offerings from 10 bux to 80 bux. I decided to try out the Motion Pro Titan throttle tube. I trust the company. Have used several of their products. Smoother action & shorter twist peaked my interest.

Before I took the stock stuff off I marked with tape the throw, which surprised me as being a true quarter turn throttle. It feels more like a half turn throttle when you are riding. Yes I jest on the half turn comment. But it does feel like it is more than a quarter turn on the road.

I did have to adjust the cable quite a bit during the install. Used a pair of Pro Taper grips I had laying around. & wired them on.

Bottom line... Do not waste your money on this tube. It is exactly a quarter turn, same as the stocker. Same feel too. So far the worst dollars I have spent on the Grom. I suppose it could be worse.

Actually it does get worse. Sorta...

I commented before that I might pick up another grom motor & modd that. Keep my stocker for resale later down the road. Well I put in a bid on fleabay,. After I placed the bid ,Cisco commented that they are different animals than the SF motors. I was hoping not to win. The grom Gods were not in my favor that day. I won. Drat.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/263699863271

Now I need to find a blown up OG... LOL

EDIT: The centercases from a 18 & a 15 have the same numbers. The stators & flywheel are different. Although an add from egay stated their stator for sale was good for a 13 to an 18 (UK seller). So there is hope yet...
