I was looking at the bike for 2014 on honda.ca and I saw the return of the CBR125R. It got me thinking when I saw the 6speed gear box it came with.
Why did we get the 4speed instead of a 6speed? The price of the CBR125R is almost the same as the Grom, why not use the same transmission?
Can it be bolted on to the Grom?

It is only a $300 difference in MSRP from the Grom to the CBR125R. But the Grom doesn't need any additional gears, it can barely pull 4th gear on the top end. But the CBR is liquid cooled, has a different bore and stroke, pretty much a totally different engine.

CBR needs more gears because it has a very peaky powerband and probably doesnt make power till 7k. Therefore needing a very close ratio transmission. The Grom on the other hand is pretty torquey for its size. I have a feeling the stock ECM is holding back power by retarding the timing. Who knows maybe someone will make a 5th gear like the pitbikes.

Absolutely correct.......thus the term mixing apples and oranges.
The two are not the same.

well if they put that 6spd in the grom the MSRP in Thai would be close to 3000 usd, and that would translate to a $4200 msrp grom stateside......
A wealth of knowledge, as usual. So, would you say the Grom is overpriced? Would it be even more so with a 6 speed tranny? How about with a tranny riding it?

I don't think the price would go that high, the CBR125R is only about 500$ more than the Grom and it has a few things that the Grom doesn't have. I was thinking it could help to get the full potential of the little engine.

Thus the "market place". Those of you who are reading this and have 4 speed groms......woulds you spend the difference for a 6 speed, and what do you get?

Rather have a grom, it's a completely different beast than the cbr 125. If I was going to get a 125cbr I'd just get the 250cbr. I don't see the point of the 125cbr honestly

Exactly. I bought a Grom because it's a Grom. I don't even see the utility of the CbR250, frankly. Ninja 300 seems like the better bike, but that's getting off topic. The Grom is unique, fun, and economic. It turns heads. There's a lot of appeal to it.
