I sold my ST1300 and want to transfer the plates to my GROM when it comes in September. I just pay the regestratiion in May. However when I called Progressive to cancel the insurance, they said they are sending a notice to NJDMV that Im operating a motorcycle without insurance! WTF?!? I dont HAVE a mc to operate WO insurance!

They want me to surrender my plates. I never heard of this before. Can I get away w/o surrendering? I called DMV and they say ten days. After bouncing it around the office.

Thanks!

In Maryland I had to turn in my plates BEFORE canceling insurance. BTW we had two year registration stickers and if you returned the tags before the end of the first year the DMV refunds your money for the next year. NJ might pro-rate like that then just go through the regular new tag process.

I will check that out. But I dont think they give you any money back. In NJ the period of registration is one year.

I had the same thing happen to me two years ago.. I was nervous went to dmv and told them I wanted to keep my plates because I liked the phrase and they said ok. It really didnt make any sense, I had allstate and they said that they would contact the dmv to tell them my insurance was up, yet I never got a notice or fee. I would go to the dmv and talk to them or simply call the trenton number. They will give you all the info you need.

PS.. I still have my plates from over two years ago and no consequences in NJ.

The lady told me the reason DMV wants the plate back is so they can recycle it so there are no duplicate plates.
