My daughter threw out one of those courier pouches and I got it! A courier pouch is like a canvas pocketbook. Its got a strap about 2 inches wide and five feet long and is adjustable for lenth. You wear it diagonally across your body. It goes in your lap or hangs a little to your left or right according to your choice.

It holds as much as a backpack and has a velcro closed flap. It doesnt interfer with the bikes control and now the weight is off your back and resting partially on your lap. The contents are easily accessable by you when you stop. Like a back pack it goes with you so you dont have to worry about it or its contents being stolen.

I've been using a backsack. I had a couple that I got for free at some shows. I liked them so I bought this one.

Put it on and I forget I am wearing it. Use it to carry phone and glasses. Went to Verizon store the other day and came home with two new iPhones and accessories. It is not huge but so far it is very light and comfortable and carries everything I need.

I have a Dakine Drafter back pack. Its actually a mountain bike back pack but works great!!!
It has a pocket for a camel bak water container and extra straps all over.
I can use the straps and attach it to the bike or switch them around the back and carry my helmet...

Can you fit a clipboard for 8.5x11 paper in that? I like the look of it. I usually stick to backpacks cause I hate how messenger bags slide around. And then if you do happen to overload it, it'll bite into your shoulder.

I ride around with a boring and anonymous backpack found at my house and sometimes with an art tube - something like this:

because I sometimes have to transport building plans around the city for work. It makes it a lot more fun going to project sites when you have a Grom.

I bought a messenger bag from Swiss army. It's super small (as a matter of fact it's called the Grom) and light and it flings over one shoulder and I don't even know I'm wearing it. It's got a place for your iPod to come out the top. It's shaped like a teardrop. Plenty of room for everything I need.
