Hi,
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to All!!!
Guys & Gals,
The next post, probably Saturday, will be a video of the first running 170cc Grom. I have been working overtime to get it running before the end of the month.
Till Then...
Brian
I came.

Lol. Can't wait to see that baby!

Be careful you don't loop it out and toss it down the road with all that extra power.

Can't wait for the vid and ride report.

170 is a 36% increase in size so I'm going to guess Brian's bike makes 10hp on his dyno and he will get exactly 36% increase in power.

Never happen but that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'm interested in how long the connecting rod holds up with the 170cc kit. It may be fine, but in several tests the 180cc kits were breaking the con rods, not because there is a problem with the piston its just too much stress for the rod. I have no doubt BrianS's kit will be great quality, i just hope the con rods are strong enough to hold up over time.

If this is yumi stuff, I'd expect nothing better.. I would however be suprised that they aren't selling the kit anyway, leaving that problem up to the consumer to figure out

In theory those numbers are correct but with a modified head and maybe one or two other small things I believe it will put out over that. But not too much more

Yes I agree. But whatever it puts out this in going to be an interesting read.

No, that is exactly why they aren't releasing the 180cc kit. Anytime you add mass onto the piston as with a 180cc piston you are putting more stress on the engine and something will eventually give. The stock con rod just isn't strong enough.

The smoking i was getting turned out to be my fault. One of my gas cans had a little diesel in it. I don't normally keep diesel at all and i accidentally put about 1/8 gallon in the tank without realizing it. Since then everything has been flushed and the smoking is gone. I installed the new V2 piston the cam and throttle body and it is running great now.

Trust me I know there has been frustration. I was the first one other than the factory to install their bore kit, probably in the world so i have a lot of money invested in these products. I must admit I was mad, first there were delays which took 3 months to get my parts then the first piston i had the skirt was too long and hit the crank. I then had the spacer on the 31mm intake with holes .5mm too small (not that big of a deal)

Since then these problems every one of them has been addresses, fixed and each kit has been replaced free of charge, all you have to do is ask. I talked to the owner for several hours and I know he cares about selling quality. The difference with Yuminashi is all you have to do if there are problems is either contact him or one of his distributors and they will look into it. Even the takegawa products are not without flaws. People were having problems with the wrist pins in the Takegawa stroker kits as well and some of the gears on the transmissions were breaking on the tak transmissions. Product development and improvement is an ongoing process and will continue to be. Look at a huge company like xbox. They sold millions of these units and there are quite a few that had the red ring of death.

The point is that this company is concerned about improving their products and i am giving them another chance. If you have issues with what you bought let him know so he can make sure the future products are updated.

you are right about defective units in mass production, you are wrong though because it seems like this company doesnt do any r&d in house and just sends prototypes out (as a complete solution) and takes the r&d feedback AFTER it reaches the end user.

these units like you said, if they installed them in their own grom, it wouldnt have worked, so why the fuk was it allowed to go out the door? IMO that is piss poor quality control, using the customer as the main r&d? yea no thanks

Yep, I agree. Very sloppy of Yuminashi to do that. If they do things like that. Just makes you question what else they will do.
The only thing they have going for them right now is that they are the only BBK on the market for now. Soon enough that will no
longer be the case. People want reliable kits. After all that's why they bought a Honda.

So far, every aftermarket bore-up kit has used a nearly skirtless piston...minimal material on the thrust sides, none elsewhere. Less skirting = more rocking inside the bore, not what I'd want with a substantially larger-than-stock piston.

Ultimately, stroker cranks may have a place in the tuning catalog, too...

Yuminashi does a lot of in house R&D their test machines, they have many many hours of operation on each kit before they sell it. I only know of a couple kits that reached the customers like this and they were all replaced. Its unfortunate that it happened, but all new kits have been fixed before shipping. The 150cc pistons had a much wider skirt than stock and the new piston still has a larger skirt to prevent rocking in the bore, but It has been slightly narrowed. The change is not as drastic to cause excessive rocking. The dome has been reshaped as well. This spring i plan on putting many miles on it myself so we will see.

Remember a few years ago when Toyota was having problems with the accelerators sticking. Why were they allowed to go out the door that way. I'm just saying even big auto manufacturers with good reputations for quality make mistakes. Yuminashi is a relatively new company, but the owner has been involved in designing parts for these small engines for a long time before he started the company. First impressions are hard to overcome, but i wouldn't dismiss them quite yet. I believe their products will prove pretty reliable, but only time will tell.

Actually Kitaco just released their 133 and the 144 and cam should be on it's way as well
