Hello forum members!! I'm "green" to riding and modding and as I've been searching and lurking on the forum to gather information and experience yall share (thank you!) I've come into a dilemma; being.... I want to mod this bike so [email protected] bad, but need a street legal bike for my license appointment in july.

So far I've scoured the Maryland MVA motorcycle licensing pamphlet for regulations regarding the bike's street legal status. (see photo capture)

Motor vehicle Vehicle Line Font Diagram

Most of what is said is 100% straight forward: needs a headlight, signals, mirrors, etc... I got that. However Im sure there are a few mod's that can be done while retaining the legal status, or appearing to not be heavily modded so as to raise question by the instructor. Any ideas?

After a small mishap I needed to change my front headlight housing and signals.... smh.... Does anyone think the smoked flush front signals or thai headlight will be a problem? what if I add an HID?

I've also replaced the stock mirrors with bar ends, which I assume wont be a problem as because they meet the 7" requirement. a non stock location is ok right?

The big question for me is (and it very well may be stupid)... what is an unaltered fender? ... will removal of the large fender hanging down from the rear signal make my bike not street legal? ... even if i relocate the plate light? What is the wheel guard that wraps the rear tire called... a fender?

Are there any other mod's that i should consider that wont change the legal status of my bike?

Thanks in advance!

^^^ this... My inspection guy deals mostly in Harley's and choppers (read: custom bikes) and when I took the grom over I asked him if the small smoked signals at home in the box would fail my next inspection if I put them on. He chuckled and said 'I don't care about any of that sh!t, if it's there and blinks your good' PA code states they have to be amber, blink at some minimum speed and need a certain minimum distance end to end blah blah...

don't know about MD, but all you need in NC is to have a head light, tail light/brake light (if you have both a front and rear brake they both have to operate the brake light) a working horn and one mirror on the left side along with decent tred left on the tires.

thanks fellas... Im sure there are a few state inspection places that wont hold me to stock when signal lights and such are functional. (crossing fingers) my problem is ill be riding up to the MVA for the appt, where they do an inspection of the bike prior to the license test from what I've read... Hopefully the person will be looking for function over strict interpretation of the regulations. speaking of which... any idea how i can actually read the laws/regulations checklists that the inspector would be using?

Any ideas if removing the rear "upper" fender will be a problem? Whats that tiny one called? Im assuming its the 'hugger' ive seen described in some braced swingarm descriptions. Can that count as a fender? Thanks again!

jmzd4 ... thanks for the run down. Fortunately/unfortunately ive only logged about 125 miles and the grom stock tires are nearly full tread. I had just installed the one bar end mirror on the left side and took it for a ride to 7-11 where a nice fella on a harley told me the second one is necessary in MD. .. which stinks cause i like the minimalist look.

if you are into the minimalist look try the Driven D-Axis bar end mirrors. They are pricey but damn do they look good, for the cheaper route just go get some cheap bicycle bar end mirrors. I only use the right one when I'm at a stop light.

IMO the only true mod that the Grom NEEDS is suspension and that will be street legal and make the bike better. I went with Ohlins rear shock and full RaceTech front fork kit.

A softer, wider, more comfortable seat will be street legal and well as stickier tires.

I realize these mods don't look sexy but they make the bike better and will be legal.

I agree 100% they look really nice, but expensive for mirrors. The cheap ebay ones i got dont have much build quality but they will do.

Again, thanks! All great ideas to keep me busy and street legal till the appointment.
