So modded the stock exhaust on the grom. With exhaust kits still comming out and prices all over the board I wanted something to get me by till next spring when I pony up for a full exhaust.I mostly wanted some sound and I am super happy with what I ended up with..I dont have a video on line with sound,,but if you are on instagram I do have a video there. I go by barnyardn40s if you want to see/hear it..

Its simpe and straight forward..I cut the back off at the exhaust side.took about an 1 1/2 off the pipe,,torched out the centers untill I got to the straight pipe that comes into the muffler. This peice is plugged and has holes drilled into as part of the muffler.I torched ou tthe center of that so I had a straight through pipe.

After that i found by putting different size tube and differnt lenghts tube I could change the sound. When i found a sound I liked I sleeved the tube over the stock one inside the muffler.I couldnt get my welder in there so I pinched the tube just enough so that it was press fit onto the stock muffler.
I then welded in a brace and used the stock turn down and welded the end cap on.

you dont have to weld the end cap on.I did it because i didnt see a need to weld the adapter sleeve back on just so I could rivit it.Plus I did another pipe like this and the rivits always seemed to come loose so she got welded.lol

hope i did the pics right...

Yea,,the housing is just for looks. The inside is just a straight pipe and all the stuff on the right came out of exhaust. My first cut was right behind the weld at the end of the housing. Then the cap which is the last piece on the right pops out.the rest I torched out as you can see by the cuts. Oh and an FYI ,,don't drop the housing,,haha it will bend out of round and it sucks trying to get it round again. I won't say how I figured that out..lol

I know before we put Alan's exhaust on, we started it with no stock slip on (aka, header pipe only) and it wasn't loud at all. The stock cat eats a ton of noise. So it doesn't suprise me that a straight pipe sounds decent.

If you just cut at the notch in the rear mount bracket you can save yourself alot of work. The rear end will just slide off and you can re-rivet your stock cap. Easy savings over a aftermarket exhaust. Don't cut to deep or you will cut through the area that the cap slips on. Now I need to find a cat-delete test pipe that plugs in at stock location. Should be alot cheaper than a full system. BTW you can keep your stock heat shield and plastic cover. You may want to cut them down to your liking. I ground off the brackets and hit it with some standard rattle can flat black. Heat has not been an issue with the paint yet but I can always get some high temp if necessary. The Pro Armor Badge is off my RZR4 doors and is hiding my nasty bodywork on the ground off rear bracket; I could have made my grinding alot nicer but I had that metalic badge sitting around and I wanted an aftermarket look so I just riveted on the badge. Start to finish in an hour.

Make sure to make a precise cut (use masking tape) so the stock cap will line up well with your cut for the factory appearance.

un plugging it will really make it sound nice..Two things Ive had issues with in the past with other bikes is if you dont straight pipe it your exhaust will sound really fart/tin can like. The other is it will loosen the rivits constantly..Not saying it will happen to you,,but had it happen to me.much bigger cc dispalcements though could be the issue there.

Great job.. Very discriptive I really like the idea. I am a welder/fabricator on the side and imin the process of building 3 model exhaust one being a shorty 2nd being a full size 3rd being a shorty low pipe. I will be offering all exhaust with or without cats but I'm
Curious by your statement when you said adding different size pipe for a different sound? Are you referring to a baffle inside of the pipe or changing the overall dimension of the pipe? In only curious so I can toy with the pitch/sound during fabrication any feedback would be much appreciated. All my experience in exhausg fab is for cars. Downpipes cat backs etc. So I. Curious about the different pitches
