but they do it so it makes the car "look fast" lol

Lol. In the 240sx world... on the sr20det, the coil packs are known to over heat and start to cut out after they get heat soaked. The trick is to remove the coil cover and space up the rear of the hood. The cowl induction affect draws air over the top of the engine (over the coils) and prevents it from happening. It's a very common mod in the drifting/auto x crowds. It serves a purpose, and makes the difference between running a good lap or cutting out halfway through and scrubbing the lap.

Somewhere along the lines... drifting became the new cool thing to do and alot of the tricks were picked up by honda bois.

I understand about heat soak and air packing in the engine bay, had an 89 LX that used to do that, i opened up the firewall into the cowl vent but good lord, 200+ bucks for 4 spacers and bolts? hahahahaha
