Well... lesson learned don't use the razor blade method to cut off grips!!!

I bought a pair of renthal dual compound grips. And I thought grips were universal as long as you bought for the correct bar width (7/8")

NOPE I WAS WRONG!!!

Since i was installing my Racebarz, it was a perfect time to install my grips as well. I watched a few videos on youtube that covered two methods on removing stock grips.

1) Razor Blade
2) Air Compressor

I don't own a ir compressor, so razor blade method was my only choice.

Clutch side went fine, but to my shock once i cut the throttle side grips. The throttle tube is not smooth and has two lips on each end of the tube!!! The tube also has a very rough knobby tire like texture!!!

I look at the stock grip that now is cut in half, to find there hollow spaces to accommodate the two lips on the throttle tube. But my replacement Renthal grips don't have this feature.

I went to Renthal site for help, and they recommend that to REPLACE the throttle tube with a new smooth version!!!

Yeah, i should have watch a few more videos before i started to cut!

So now what do i do... HELP!

1) Can i somehow modify the Renthal grips?
2) Go to MNNTHBX site and order a g2 quick turn SMOOTH throttle body?
3) Go to honda and order another factory grips?

Thanks...

Hello,

Could you post some pics? It might help us answer your question.

I usually use a razor to cut them off. I have used a hair dryer to soften the rubber when installing stubborn grips. As far as the groove your talking about I'd have to see it. I've replaced grips, but not on the grom.

Yep. Grip glue is all you need. Acts as a lubricant when sliding on. You want the grips to be snug so they won't slide around on you while riding. Also, if the clutch side went on easily, you might want to double check you put on the correct grip. They are two different sizes. (Not saying you didn't know that, but its a common mistake that results in a few returns each month due to "faulty" grips, then I have to point it out to the customer)

And just fyi. All dirtbike and sportbike grips are 7/8". Only ones that aren't are harleys (1"). The size of the bar doesn't matter. 7/8" or 1 1/8" or 1 3/16". All controls, perches, and grips are 7/8"

HA... u know that is a shame because i knew the clutch size ID was bigger but i ended up put the wrong grip on the clutch side!...

Now that I have that switched... I'm still having issues getting the brake side grip on the stock throttle tube.

I will head to cycle gear when they open up later today.

Clutch side should be smaller ID. Throttle tube makes the brake side slightly bigger.

beat me to it, your lever look nice how doing they feel when riding ?

I like them a lot. I'm a small guy with girly hands... I don't have to open up my hands nearly as much to squeeze the brake or clutch.

I can shift more smoothly now.

I would call asv to see if they have any blemished levers to save money. I threw away $30 on ebay chazzo levers. Bc of my bad exp with cheaper levers, i just waited until i found a good deal on CRG Arrow mirrors, instead of buying cheaper clones.

Hair spray works the same as grip glue if you have some of that

I live alone and i choose to be bald... no hairspray but i will go to cvs to get a bottle.

But what about the lips on the factory throttle tubes? and the rugged texture? I think those will veraciously impede me from sliding the new grip on?

Most of the video i see on youtube when installing brake side grips have smooth throttle tube...

Shoe,

I like option #2. Buy the quick turn throttle from MNNTHBX and then use what ever grips you want.

I would do that except for some stupid reason I really really really like the stock grips so I am not changing.

For now.

Hairspray is the way to go. Using the air compressor didn't work with my driven D3 grips. You can grind down the ribs just don't burn a hole through the tube. Last option would be buying the smooth throttle. Tried going to my local shop to see if they have a different throttle tube but didn't have any for our bikes yet.

I dremel'd off the sharp ridges at the end of the throttle tube. I still got a tiny rip in the Spider grips I put on from the nubs through. Definitely makes slipping the grip on more difficult than usual. Next time I'd probably sand off all the nubs to make it a regular smooth tube.

Grip glue works fine, but I've found it sets up pretty quick, a minute or two and it's locked on. Hairspray gives you a little more time in case you need to reposition the grip, and seems to hold just as well.
