I used the search and didn't see anything about this, but has anybody with a black Grom noticed red paint under the black paint? When I took my fairings off to do the K&N r-1100/air box delete/brace rod install, I noticed that the black paint had been scratched off inside of a couple of the screw holes from the hardware. When I looked more closely I found that the bodywork on mine appears to have been painted with the red paint and then painted over with the black. If someone has posted about this, please post a link. Thanks everybody.

That is weird. Mine was red when I bought it. I purchased black body work and swapped them. The parts looked like they were injection molded red and black to me. Meaning the red was red under the red and the black was black under the black.

I will take pictures soon. I am referring to the hex screws on the side fairings. The countersunk/recessed area had rubbed some of the black off and it was clearly pearlescent red paint underneath.

I actually cracked one of my fairings when the bike fell over and I too noticed some red underneath the black. Very curious why this would have been done.

yup this thread is proof. its an extra layer of paint over the red so there is more weight and drag.

Is it possibly a base coat? I have seen crazy paint layers on older Honda bikes.

I was sand blasting an SL70 headlight bucket and found no less than 8 layers of factory paint. I later learned that this is common on the Honda Ruby Red color of that era. Maybe the black needs a red undercoat?

My black bike was the same way...went to put red upper plastics on it and found on the inside of the black panels it to had a red base under the black paint

My white pearl plastic has black on the under side. I assume base paint is going to a color that will bring out the Pearl color

its the same for my cbr1000rr, when i drilled holes for my sliders. it was black then red, then either black or white plastic. i forget. pretty sure it was white tho.

It might just be primer. Red grey and black primers are pretty common.

I found yellow under my red plastics. So I just figured base coat.
