I want to bring up a topic that is getting increasingly on my nerves lately: Texting While Driving

I assume many of you guys here are good drivers. If you can operate a motorcycle, you can probably drive a car just fine. You also are more aware of dangerous habits. So because of this, I am not directing this at any of you. But we all know people who do this.

On my 11 mile ride to work today I counted 16 people looking at their phones instead of the road. Being on the Grom, that is even more scary to see than before. Every day I see these people all over the roads. Many of them are drifting out of their lanes or sitting still at green lights. Plenty of these people will be in accidents because of this at some point in time.

Studies show that texting is 6 times more dangerous than driving drunk. Yet no one seems to take this seriously like drunk driving.

PLEASE do not let your friends, wives, girlfriends, whoever else or yourselves text while driving. We all want to be able to ride our Groms without getting mashed by some zoned out driver looking at their phone.

I totally agree but one thing. What about looking at maps on your phone? I'm scared to do it while driving because I know a cop would just think I'm texting and give me 5 points on my license. I think paper maps would cause more of a distraction/danger than using a map on a cell phone. Just a thought.

All my recent cars have maps, driving directions, destinations that display on the dashboard, so no phone involved.

Yes, people text all the time. About a month ago, I picked up a new Vespa 300 and was out breaking it in. In traffic some guy in a pickup bumped into the back of me as we were waiting for the light to change. I edged forward and 10 seconds later he bumped into me again. Not hard, but still. I put the scooter on the stand and walked back and knocked on his window. He jumped cause he had his phone on his knee texting and had no idea he had bumped into me TWICE or that I had got off the scooter. He was at least 25 years old.

Got to say something here......
I ride a bicycle about 80 miles a week and I'm flat scared when I ride on the street and spent 3 different times sitting on a bus bench drinking coffee and counted cars with drivers on a cell phone. Just to see the numbers,

I counted every signal for 10 signals and there were at least 1 driver for 95% of the signals on a cell phone. Did this 3 defferent times/days and decided to give it up to keep from going nutso.

So, whats the lesson.....the numbers are growing....it's out of control & no enfrocement of the law. Your best move.....be friggin careful, "all the time" because that is the only thing that will keep you safe......errr...slightly safer than now.

I am honestly thinking of calling around to my state representatives and local sheriff office to speak to people about this. Fines should be much higher than they are and the cops should be pulling people over for this.

I generally just turn my phone off when I get in the car.

Been doing this for a very long time now.

I think it is funny when I get txts from people that know me and they read...

blah blah blah....

blah blah blah....

Are you there....

Oh, you must be driving. TTYL

Behavior isn't going to change because:

1) there's no penalty
2) nobody is enforcing the law
3) people are self absorbed and
4) society is going down the tubes

If you get smoked on your bike, the worst thing that will happen to the idiot at fault for robbing your family of a loved one will be receiving a fine.

Riders need to correct these idiots whenever possible. As a society, we're too concerned with being politically correct or hurting someone's feelings. That's why kids go around unsupervised with potty mouths. In the old days, an elder would correct them and possibly wash their mouth out with soap. Time to correct these idiots before they kill us. I don't care about their feelings. I care about going home to my wife and kids.

So, next time you see this, whether you're on your bike or in your cage, speak up! Honk. Wave. Salute them with the bird. Roll down your window and scold them. Tell them to hang up and drive. We've got to take society back.
