So I just joined the forum, I will be receiving my Grom at the end of this month. For the past few weeks, Ive been looking into mods and so far I have found PCV w/ autotune, 181cc BBK,
full Yoshi pipe, intake mod or replaced with aftermarket pipe. My usage will be commuting and twisty riding. I would like get the most bang for the buck, also I stated an engine swap in my title.

I do, have an 09' CBR600RR engine that I would like to use for a possible swap. If thats even possible, I know the weight/size of the engine will affect the handling and geometry. What are the pros and cons?
All replys welcome.

thanks - J.Q.

Hey,

I am in the same boat as you (sort of) I have been reviewing an larger displacement engine swap vs. BBK. Before you do any engine work, you have some forethought to give other parts....

Brakes. The brakes on the grom are not terrible, however, they are fairly mushy. At the very least, SS brake lines help tremendously. In addition, a different caliper or rotor, or both can help as well. Especially in the front. I wouldn't be too worried about the rear, given the tires.

Tires. Replace. They suck. End of story.

SUSPENSION. Unless your 110-125 the suspension is crap. If you going to bee adding weight with engine parts...SUSPENSION. Stiffer spring in the rear at the very least. But if you are thinking about big bore, don't cheap out. These parts are your platform to build on. Full shock with adjustable damping on the rear, and rebuild the front. Springs and valving. Don't just add higher viscosity oil.

Okay, if you decide to go big bore. Grab a pipe, CAM, Intake and ECU. Start there. Then grab your big bore kit and switch to synthetic oil!

If you are going to go engine swap, which as I said am also still on the fence about, lots to think about. People thinking im ludicrous for putting a 250 in it. I don't want to pee in your cheerios, as I don't want anyone to say the same to me, but a 600 engine is dumb. It's wide. Think about where your legs would go, where your shifter goes, where your rear brakes go. Your on 12 inch wheels. That swap would require several larger radiators mounted. Lots of fab work for a massive under frame. You would lose the grom in that, I don't think the engine would fit between the side panels.

Think thumper...I want to put in a 250r engine from a CBR250. a crf450 engine has been done. If you want to go nuts, look for a KTM 690 engine. You would lost all ground clearance.

Think about fuel pressure, fuel consumption, wiring harness, electrics, ignition. All this stuff needs a place to live. I say you look at the 250r swap and I will do it when you complete it. I am about to wuss out on my build and go with Brians 170 kit. I don't want to weld on my frame yet. I am thinking I will by a third and butcher that one when the first two are paid off.....

Lot's to think about man. If you have a complete bike, and all the parts, that puts you so close. Just strip both parts and mock it all up, see what you can do. I think you can do it, just know the work it's going to take.!!!!!

Enjoy!

What kind of work is entailed with going with the 181cc BBK and what brands are good? I heard yuminashi had some problems in the beginning, then there is takegawa. So many options....
Also, thank you 309Antonios for clarifying that for me. I needed to see how reasonable that swap is and now its clear. Im staying with the mods

im still thinkin of doin a 600 or 1000cc swap next year
So im not the only crazy one!

BUT, as stated above I just wanted to see if it would be worth the work and the hassle. If I wanted the power I'll just get a bigger bike that can handle power. I just wanted to see
if I had any options with that spare engine. After watching that youtube video of the honda monkey with 600cc swap, it doesnt look that comfortable to ride.

I think I will ride my 1999 Hayabusa and not worry about building my Grom for max speed via engine swap.

the thing about the Grom build that I like is that you will learn about A/F mixture and adjustment, A/F mapping, electrical wiring and do's and don'ts, brakes, tires, suspension setup ,lighting and many more topics about the Grom that will apply to other motorcycles that you buy or get down the road of life. It will make things that you think that you could not or would not do possible. Great learning tool for the future of your motorcycle riding and great people that share information and also the love of motorcycling no matter what size the engine is.

I do like seeing Grom owners that do expand the possibilities of the Grom and show the world that just because the Grom is small in size it can be ridden from Santa Cruz to LA and back, through the Alps and UK mountain range, through the cities of Thailand/Japan/Asia, from Oregon to Alaska and carry many types of Load.

Ride safe all.

I vote bbk. The cbr motor would make the handling rubbish and thats even if you fit it. Then there is the small gas tank on a 600cc motor that would get you what 70 miles max? Not worth it if you ask me.

Why juice the motor. Get a cbr 250 instead. The fun with the Grom is to do the best with what you have! I personally feel that the basic mods are all thats required.
full exhaust system takes away weight and people will hear you....they cant see you.
chimera filter full kit...couple lbs with airbox off.
ohlins rear ..best bang for the buck
racetech valves and springs up front
stainless steel brakelines really just up front will do.
stock calipers with braided lines can throw my 250 lb butt over the bars...you can over break these things and all you will do is plant your face on the pavement.
i have been a pro roadracer since 1994 and thats my 2 cents.
enjoy the grom for what it is .....a mini hooligan bike!

Some people want the grom for everyday use and stuffing a 600 or 1000cc into the grom for me would just be for fun as i bought this bike for a toy. MPG i really dont care if it only got 30 miles on a tank. If i want to go fast ill hope on my sportbike and go to the track if i want a long cruise ill take out the harley, but the grom is simply a project fun toy for me thats why I added the turbo and if i blow the motor i just build bigger.

Same here, it's a fun toy/motorcycle to fix up and learn about various performance package that can be used on a motorcycle.

I've spent more money on my RC helicopter crashes than on the Grom, well maybe even amount.

Bottom line motorcyles are fun and cost less than a wife/non-productive-least sexy girlfriend

GROMs are for stunts and fun and wheelies and burn outs and going 55. not 155. I wouldn't chop up my grom for a 600cc build. just build a minimized custom frame for your engine and make a whole new bike call it a w.e. and leave your poor GROMS alone. well bbk and intake and Yoshi. but don't do a swap it will take the fun out of it. plus if you know how to swap a motor over and re-engineer the whole bike basically you should know how to weld up a mini-bike frame....

Several of us decided to leave our Groms stock in part since everything about the Grom is set up for a bike that is supposed to go 60ish mph. To change that you need to change a bunch of stuff which is fine, but at some point you will be money ahead to buy a larger bike. Lots of nice small bikes out there now including some nakeds. The 390 Duke comes out in the US this fall. If I were a little taller, I would buy a supermoto thumper like the DRZ400. If you can swing it, getting a second, faster bike works too.
