I mostly ride city but would love to hop on an ride the interstate as well. My grom is all stock as of now and it just isn't fast enough for the interstate. Do you ever think it could be modified to run 70 mph? I want to stick with the same piston an cylinder for reliability. Im thinking I would have to go a tooth bigger on the front sprocket for more speed. The only problem is getting the hp to push it. Would a good intake, exhaust, ecu flash, fuel programmer get enough power? I think the grom would love a high compression piston if that wasn't enough power. What are your thoughts??

Mine does 62 with exhaust and intake no fuel programmer yet and creeps up to 66 so I'd say it's "possible." let the weather warm up and we will see all kinds of thing that are currently in the works poke their heads out.

My bike has K&N airfilter and MNNTHBX exhaust and I have tried both 14T and 16T sprockets. With 14T sprocket, you can get 70MPH easily. Only problem is that once I hit rev limit, it push the speed back to 67 or 68MPH. With 16T sprocket, well... it takes forever to hit top speed. Currently I'm running stock sprocket and I will be going back to 14T once I get bigger tires.

remember with the 14T, the speedo is off at least by 3mph

I can keep a speed of 70-72 tucking if there no winds. Stock gearing. Exhaust and K&N filter inside box and of course 118 pound rider. It's possible when weather conditions allow you to.

I have same airbox mod from Stroked GE build, stock gearing and exhaust and 175 lbs. Rode back from Daytona to Jax during bike week using I-95 N (90 miles of interstate) and maintained 60-65 slightly tucked most of the way with some 70 mph areas and actually hit 73 on a few of the overpass downhills. My speedo seems to be spot on accurate compared to side of the road radar readings and a few other bikes. In order to hold 70 mph sitting up you are going to need more power for sure, but with the big bore kits coming certainly possible.

Just ride it 62 mph on the highway in the right-hand lane and be happy. That's what I do. The interstate is not as much of a problem as secondary roads where the speed limit is 55 or 60, but people can't pass cause any uphill and you will slow down so much that you could impede traffic. Here in Texas we have wide shoulders and I just get over when that happens. On the interstate, people can just go around you, plus 62 is as fast as many heavy trucks, old people in Priuses, and cars pulling oversized trailers go anyway. To me it is perfectly safe on the interstate riding the Grom and I have put at least 1000 miles riding I-35 into San Antonio and Austin. You just can't pass as a rule. Something like a Ninja 300 tackles the interstates with ease. Of course during rush hour in Austin, you average about 20 mph because of gridlock.

How long is forever? 1 min-5 mins? When you did you tests did you also compare the speeds with a GPS?

Yes, with the Kitaco 164 installed I can do 70 sitting up. It is possible. Before, I could do 70-71 on the highway in a tuck with intake , exhaust, lightened flywheel and oil spinner, and EJK.

I'm curious what a 11:5:1 compression would do for power. I have no problem running 93 octane. I know in,my crf450 it was a vast improvement

My guess is it would help a good bit. I would say you add a cam, hc piston, exhaust and intake you would be around 12hp I would guess. Probably most power in mid to upper range. Of course you would have to run premium but if you cant afford premium in a bike that gets 100mpg then maybe motorcycles arent for you. :)
