Impressive MPG according to Honda

Honda's Japan website is boasting the Grom gets 63.2 Km/l. That equates to 148.66 mpg or 178.53 mpg Imperial gallon. Wait for it, wait for it....
It also says driving at a constant 60 Km/h or 38 mph.

Yeah, TOTALLY dont care about the mileage on this thing. Not for the way I am going to use it. If I get anything over 50 mpg I will be thrilled. I think I am going to be very happy.
38 mph might get you 80 mpg.

Under ideal atmospheric conditions.

148 mpg from 125cc from that old an engine design is hilarious.

I hope its true though.

Really? It seems to me they have updated the valve train with roller rockers for less friction, they have updated and computerized the ignition for better combustion they have added FI for more accurate fuel metering. IMO the only thing "old" about the engine design is the horizontal cylinder. But based on that only, I believe the first engines had a vertical cylinder so those are actually an older design than this one. But I am no engineer.

I guess what I am asking is what about this engine makes it an old design?

Internal combustion.. That stuff is so 18th century
Nuclear fusion motorcycle is what we need. Little green glowing lump of metal between our legs. :big smile:
Whatever it is I know it's better than my truck.

Im not sure but my 1974 1600 cc VW Beetle (aircooled) would get like 28 mpg highway and my 2001 Toyota ECHO (watercooled) driven the same way on the highway (60-65 mph) gets 53 mpg.

On thing that amazes me is the GROM is aircooled and has a catalytic converter. Years ago they said an aircooled engine would destroy a cat.
I worry about mpg all day in my daily. Don't care about the groms mpg lol
I have done just over 100 miles so far to a full tank still have 2 of the read out blocks left, I think I will get around 130 to a tank, granted not been above 55mph yet.
my little honda wave 110i gets around 160 mpg
when I refill I will know for sure, anyway why are you yanks worried about fuel consumption its almost free over there!

Thats awesome but isnt that an imperial gallon?

the handbook says 5.5 litres/ 1.45 US gallon and 1.21 IMP gallon
Was curious how much was left in my tank, so I just went and looked in my tank, its still around 2 inches deep in there. you are going to need a crane to lift that tank lid it weighs a ton, that's the first time I have opened it, as the bike came with a full tank.

Yeah I not surprised by the differences in MPG. I think evan by 1974 bugs still relied on points. If it is electronic, it is still not computer controlled and it is still sporting a carb that has been plumbed for emissions, not fuel efficiency. Not to mention the entire car is based on a 1930's design. (Im building a 63 right now.) The ECHO is so far advanced in every way shape and form I would expect it to get double the mileage.
Getting a realistic 90+mpg, out of mine at the moment! :big smile:

Now that I remember yes my 74 had points and condenser but the 75-79s were electronic fuel injected!

My friends in college Julie and Tim had a beautiful 66 bug black with red interior. It swallowed a valve one day. Tim and I went to a junk yard and got 3 junked engines for $25 and I made one good engine out of the four of them. I think the total costs in gaskets etc was $20. Julie used to feed me pickled cabbage when I went to their place to work on it. I overheard her telling Tim they ought to give me some money. But of course they had no money.

After the car was up and running the phone on my dorm hall wall rang. It was Julie telling me to come over and get some pickled cabbage. Oh boy I said I'll be right over!

As I dived into the pickled cabbage Julie said to have a look at the valve on their radiator in the bedroomas it wasnt working. OK soon as Im done!

When I went in the room she was lying on the bed with no clothes on.

Julie was a beautiful woman.

Tim was my best friend. I had seen what my wife (then my gf) did to her previous boyfriend when he asked her if he could have sex with other women.

I could just imagine what she would do to me if she found out. Uh....when she found out.

I mumbled something and got out of there.

22 YEARS LATER

Julie and Tim got married and went to work for The State Department somewhere in Africa. I never saw them again but through the alumni directory I had their email since 1995 or so.

In 1999 Osama bin Laden bombed two US embassies in Africa. Hundreds were killed and inured. I knew Tim and Julie worked somewhere for the government over there. I emailed Tim and ask if he and Julie were OK?

They were. It turned out Tim had been stationed at one of the embassies that was bombed for a couple of years. But he had transfered some time before the bombing. He said that was a good thing.

They still have the black with red interior 1966 VW 1300 Beetle. Their son took it to college.

THE END
