My dog chewed mine in half and I'm trying to replace it with aftermarket NGK wire.
I can't get the stock wire off of the coil and I'm beginning to wonder if the coil and wire are one complete unit.
Does anybody know how to change the wire, or do I need to order a complete coil / wire assembly from Honda?

The only end that unscrews is the boot side that plugs onto the spark plug. The end that goes into the coil does not come off. I nearly destroyed the cable trying to get it loose. It's permanently attached to the coil.

Or if they, or someone else, is going to make a performance replacement.

Just got done doing this mod! All i have to say is [email protected] the guy who decided to glue the wire into the coil. This took me about an hour to do, instead of 5 minutes. I found that after twisting my old wire off and trying to get the old one out with mini needle nose that it was not coming easily. So out came the torch and a needle file. I heated the needle file to glowing and slowly but steadily repeated this until i was able to remove 90% of the old wire. Not fun, but done!!

Many times the coil and wire are one part. The "cap" around the wire at the coil end is usually ridged if it is designed to unscrew and release the wire. If there's just a boot, it's glued in and as you found a major hassle to remove. Unfortunately a lot of newer stuff seems to be glued.

mine didn't come glued.
Bought a NGK CR2 wire, and a NGK J1 splicer (this is a must have, cuz it's just too easy with it).
- cut existing wire and leave 4 inches of slack from ignition coil
- hook up one end of J1 splicer
- cut NGK CR2 wire to desired length
- hook up other end of J1 splicer to the CR2 wire
- twist J1 splicer connectors until tight.

Voila!

bought the colder NGK plug, will install tonight.
Does anyone know if the gapping is the same as the stock plug? 0.8-0.9mm?

The original spark plug wire ... is it a carbon core? I suspect so ... and that a copper or spiral core would make too much RFI and EMI for the ignition and PGM FI systems unless the cap is a 5K Ohm resistor-type. Can anybody confirm the core, please? Also, can anybody confirm that the stock plug cap is a screw-on type?

Also, Instgrom: if your coil and wire weren't glued, why did you use the wire splicer instead?

Update: Spliced in a nice copper core yellow silicone plug wire today and it works just fine and looks great. NGK splice, original plug cap and plug. Screwed right on, no problem. Full power. The original wire was also copper core, by the way. You guys can go back to sleep now ...
