Best thing to do is go to a shop to try different helmets on. Everyone has different head shapes so what is good for one may be uncomfortable for another. For just in town you could go with a 3/4 helmet, or you could go full face. HJC, Icon, scorpion are ok just off the top of my head and have reasonably priced offerings. Check out these websites to get an idea of what is out there and what you find aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, but most importantly sturdy. Like anything else you get what you pay for, but it should have a DOT cert at least. My favorite is my Schubert C3 with the SRC system, but they are around $700-$800 for just the helmet and another $400 for the SRC system.

What snake said. Different shapes for different types of heads. You should know when you try them on. You want to make sure it's tight enough for safety. But also don't want to get any hot spots on the top of your head, which could really annoy you on long rides or give you headaches. You should be able to find a good helmet for not that much money $200-300, that fits the shape of your head.

If you order from a website make sure they have free shipping back if it's the wrong size. Save you some money on shipping. I bought several helmets from revzilla.com and they have always been good about resizing

Try stuff on then order from revzilla. I went with a shoei rf 1100 because it fits perfect, read alot of great reviews from people who went down with it on, and its dot plus snell rated. I payed a hair over 3 bills.. it is your life line on the streets.

I ride to work as well and it takes about 15 minutes.
I just bought the HJC FG-17 and I think it's perfect. Cost me $175 CAN. Most likely cheaper down south.

Never made sense to me how some people would spend hundreds and thousands to upgrade their bike, but end up skimping on their comfort and protection; getting the cheapest POS they can. There is a happy median...

Anyhow, a lot of members have already given you some great feedback, and honestly, you don't need the most expensive lid in order to get adequate protection, comfort and design...you def get something practical.

If you don't want to spend closer to the 1k price range, look into some of the following...

Shoei - RF 1100 or higher
Bell - Star & RS1
Arai - RXQ

You can find some premium helmets on close out or even at reasonable prices, you just have to do your research...

Shoei X-11 & X-12
Arai - Corsair & RX7
AGV - titech & gp tech

Etc...

Anyhow, good luck, happy hunting and feel free to ask for more insight.
