I like the idea of the Takegawa SP that keeps the stock style muffler but loses the cat but I was wondering if anyone has seen a header pipe that would still use the stock guards and just weld on the stock muffler. Another idea was if anyone has tried to just cut the stock setup and connect from the head straight to the up section? I don't want to go loud or anything but debating if it is really worth it to buy a $400 exhaust that really just eliminates the cat.

I suppose one could obtain proper-sized mandrel bent exhaust sections and fabricate your own, replicating the Takegawa SP header. Cutting and reusing the original OEM head pipe will leave various welded together sections, giving it the "raw" look.

If you have the skills and time, go for it.

Personally I am not that skilled but wondering about buying it or taking it to a local shop. There is only 1 header pipe I found but I don't think it would work and has some odd looking barrel on it. It looks like it could be easy to build a new header pipe with pre bent piping or a small pipe bender.

There would be a lot of cutting, bending/shaping, fit-up, tack welding, more adjustments and final welding involved. With that, labor costs could really add up fast, making the SP Takegawa exhaust system a more sensible way to go.

Good luck with the project.

I got the 23 monkey and put the sp takegawa exhaust pipe on, it added more torque on the bottom end, has very nice sound, not loud, dropped to 13 tooth up front, was not enough, so I went to 39 on rear, stock is 14-37, too hi geared, won't pull 5 th gear stock gearing, next I try 40 th rear, I will use it for exploring tight trails, riding and crossing old railroad tracks along the rivers here in Idaho, 13-39 works nice, but one more Tooth on the rear will be perfect for lower first gear riding,,,,,

I'm interested in seeing how that gearing works out for you. I am bigger guy and have already ordered the 13 tooth for my 23 monkey. I will be ordering the Takegawa as well as i'm looking for something with better sound but not obnoxiously loud.
