Handlebars

Hey guys, I definitely want to change my handlebars. Matter of fact I had a set all ready to go but clearly they are not going to work for me. So time to do some research and hopefully help others by putting it all in one place.

First - a couple of things I have learned about the factory Grom bars.

While the bike itself is small, the controls are designed for a full size adult and a lot of "mini" bars will not work. The grip portion of the bars needs to be right at 8" long for the grips and levers to fit properly. That equals 203 mm. So the closer to 200 mm for the grip portion you can get the better everything will fit. I notice a lot of mini bars have a grip with in the 175-185 mm range and that is just not enough real estate to properly mount the grips and levers.

I have a buddy that bought mini bars and later had to add bar extensions because the levers (brake and clutch) were forced onto the curved portion of the bar.

This is why I am not using the bars that I have. They are too wide. I was going to shorten them but all the extra width is in the center, if I cut the ends, the controls will not fit.

Also the factory bar end weights were installed by a gorilla on meth. Apparently they are super tight. The screw holding them on is a #3 Phillips. Use a #3 Phillips bit in an impact driver. Have a buddy hold the opposite handlebar or put it against a wall or something so that you can pound on the impact driver. The main reason for this would be to remove the screw, not necessarily to save it or keep from messing it up or striping it because it is specific to the factory bars. If you are changing bars, you will not be able to use the factory bar end weight. I suppose in that case you could darn near use a Sawzall to cut them off.

Also, while the cross bar and pad look cool (IMO) I have read a number of posts about that pad making it a PITA to get the key in and out which makes sense.

So here is the deal, if you replace your bars, please post up. Let us know what bars you went with, not just the brand but the actual model number. Also, if you can, please post a photo and give us a little review and let us know if you had any problems during the install.

Thanks

From end to end the Grom handlebar width is wider than most sport bikes with clip ons which does seem to give you room to change things around with regard to width as well. I was surprised to see they handlebars are the same width as my Vespa and Zero, especially the Vespa. Then you have those mirrors which stick out a good ways too. For lane-splitting, that might be a problem.
Looks like the width of the factory bars is 27.5 inches or 698.5mm - not counting the factory bar end wights.

Also looks like the rise of the factory bars is about 6 inches or 152 mm.
My plan is to try some Pro Taper Fat Bars. With the adapter and the tallest bars I can find, it may work. I might have to cut the width down a bit. I'm still researching. I have Fat Bars on my other bikes. I like them.
I have a set of PT style bars I was going to use but they are just too wide for the Grom IMO.
Looking at the Pro Taper site and going with 7/8" bars so that I don't need an adaptor. I think the best choices for ME would be the

School Boy Low
or
School Boy High
or
School Boy Pro

Anyone using one of these bends?

What about the pro tapers on TYGA. We should PM Paul and ask him all of these questions. That way we know why they arrived at the choice to stock only one bar for our GROMS.

Good idea.
Hey Strokd - to they talk about a way to re-use those factory bar ends on an aftermarket set of bars?
I don't think you could because the threaded part is welded into the bars, you're best off just picking up some weighted ends with the expanding core for the new bars

The Pro Tapers on Tyga's site are actually a "Honda" part.

Honda buys the bars from Pro Taper and resells them. They do this with lots of OEM parts... but in this case it's... well... more obvious... since it's heavily branded and still in their bag!

You can tell because there's a Honda sticker and part # on them. As long as Honda intended these to be an accessory for the Grom/MSX - I think it's a pretty safe bet they will be a good fit.

With that said, I'm after a crossbar-less bar, and was considering trying the Pro Taper contour "Mini High" bars

Contour | Pro Taper

200mm of grip width - which should be enough.
105mm of rise (4.13 inches)

was looking at the Pro Taper Universal Solid Mount to adapt to the 1 1/8" Counter bars and also adding 3/4" of rise... for a total of 4.89" of rise (vs 6" Grom stock)

Contour | Pro Taper

...but that still may be too low. May need to find another decent pair of riser/adapters.

I'm planing on running ProTaper Klx 110 bars, I think they will give it the super motard feel that I want, I did a trial run with a set of silver Klx 110 bars and they work great but they are silver and I ordered up some black ones to match a little better....

Pics?
So I pulled the trigger on some ProTaper School Boy High. Here are a couple of photos of them on the bike.

These are as low as you can go. Here are a couple of photos of the clearance I have between the bars and tank and full lock.
