So I have gone thru almost everything on my grom to cure my whinning or sometimes clanking sound and the only thing left I think is the cam chain. This is in my Jan 2014 grom and I have had a BBK at 2K miles in it from BrianS 170-2v to Takegawa 181-4v at 7500K and now it is close to 11K miles of Hard riding and WOT. The chain is the original chain from stock.

I think I will just buy a new chain and replace it since I have the Koso cam chain sprocket arm and guide.

Chain at BikeBandit is only like $14-15

Good question Cisco. One that I do not know the answer to.

I would upgrade if I could find one.

On order 2 cam chain, was cheaper to buy it from my local dealer in Sunnyvale Calif. Motor Cafe.

Only bad thing is that I have to drain the oil and remove the flywheel and cam sprocket when I install my new chain and remove the cylinder chain guide.

i would think that if you have a manual adjuster,once its out of adjustment,time for a new chain.
yep it is making the same noise as my 1999 Hayabusa cam chain scraping due to wear with 79,000 plus WOT miles. Time to rebuild and bore out my Hayabusa engine. Found a Hayabusa engine builder in L.A. that builds 250-300 HP engine on pump gas, I think they bore and stroke it out to 1400-1500cc

Oh on my grom cam chain, this is the grom that bent the takegawa 4 valves and also punched a hole thru the case so I think the cam chain some how stretched causing the noise problem.

Takegawa has a reinforced cam chain, not sure it's needed though.

Thanks for the heads up on Takegawa cam chain, since I had no problem with the stock chain,"except for the stretching" I ordered two of them including shipping to my house which was the cost of one of those Takegawa chain. I will wait when they have a sale and buy two of the HD Takegawa cam chain.

I wouldn't be surprised if your original cam chain got stretched when you sadly blew your motor. Imagine the stress it took the moment the valves hit the piston.

So I looked at the grom cam chain and noticed a bunch of nick marks on the inside links or new shinny metal so I'm thinking from the stretching and also from not having the inside #9 washer the teeth of the arm metal sprocket was hitting the edge of the inside links and the other thing which I noticed when the engine was idling was that the lower part of the chain coming off the cam sprocket seems to dip lower than my other Takegawa 181-4v grom when the engine is running so that makes me more sure it is a stretched worn out cam chain.

yeah replace that cam chain for sure. The engine blow up definitely would of caused possible issues with the chain.

That stated a perfectly running motor, that cam chain should be more than plenty to last the life of the motor.


FYI, the groms stock chain is made by DID as well...
