I have read that it's possible to change the fork oil without removing the folks on some motorcycles. I want to drain about half of the oil and replace it with 20 weight. Is this possible with the Grom?
I went ahead and pulled the forks. Because you have to pump the folks in and out to actually get oil out, this would make it impossible without pulling the folks. After draining roughly 200 ml, I replaced with 220 ml of 20 weight fork oil.
A test ride tomorrow will determine if it was worth the effort.
I went to the local bike shop here and they seriously had every weight but 20 wt. They even had 30wt! I will have to order some online. I am doing this just as a stop gap till I can save up for the race tech goodness.

I don't think there is any special tools. Just remember to losen the large top cap while the forks are tight in the triple tree. Then remove and drain. Work the legs back and forth to drain out the old oil. I have a graduated plastic container I'm going to drain it into that way ill know exactly how much I need to refill.
My hope is that the top cap has room where I can fab in a spacer between it and the spring stack to add about 8-10 mm of preload. Anything would be better than current. I hope to do this today so I'll update this evening.

You will need a 36 mm socket for the top cap. Picked mine up at Sears for $9. Loosen and tighten top cap with forks on the bike.
Other than that, pull the forks. Very little oil will come out on its own. Each time you pump the fork, a little more will come out. You should get about 200-220 ml out if your take you time.
Ok no special tools needed other than the 36mm socket. I did add 10mm in preload to the front. I suggest you loosen the small allen bolt inside the fork caps first then the caps themselves in the triple. Bought a bunch of 1/2 stainless washers and stacked on top of spring. 20wt feels better but still better RaceTech stuff is best. The added preload takes a bit of travel I think but the forks are more lively. Not a bad way to spend a couple hours while cranking some old school Front 242 and enjoying some Silver Bullets.
