So I did my first oil change this past weekend at 125 miles (bought it back in September of last year but live in Cleveland, OH and snow sucks).

Easiest oil change of my life. I did rock the bike back and forth about 30 times though rather aggressively as oil kept shooting out of the drain plug. I highly recommend doing this as it seems it doesn't drain as well as other bikes (yes the oil was hot did a few hot laps before the change). To my surprise a total of over a quart and 1/4 came out of it. Dealer must have put way to much in. I put in a quart of 10w-30 Honda Full Synthetic in her and a new washer.

My question for you guys is the spinner/screen cleaning? I've seen some pretty nasty pictures of these and was wondering if it's really necessary? I really don't want to have to do all of this work, I wish Honda through a damn oil filter in this thing. Thoughts about this? How long did it take you? I'm mechanically inclined but I bought the Grom for low maintenance, I have a ton of toys that get wrenched on more than riden for that...

Thanks!

Did it on my first oil change around 500+ miles and it took me about 30 since its my first time and not trying to mess anything up, screen had very little shavings but the spinner had alot of gunk. I just reused all the gaskets and no leaks. The youtube how to video is very detailed I even had to fast forward on alot of parts.

i would say cleaning the filter and spinner is definitely necessary. your choice is when and at what intervals.

the first time i cleaned my filter and spinner, around 250 miles, it took about an hour (separate from draining the oil). the main delay was the removal of one or two of the bolts that secure the casing. as referenced in the youtube video, i decided to leave the rearset/spring in place which does make the bolt removal a bit harder. well, harder if you don't have a healthy selection of tools as in my case. also, i only have a small air compressor for my impact wrench and don't have access to power where i can work on the grom, i had to go back and forth to refill the tank a couple times.

At 250 miles I decided to do my first oil change, spinner, screen cleaning. As others posted, it was very easy but took about an hour the first time being careful. I'd guess it would take me about 30 minutes on my next attempt. My screen was almost completely clean and the spinner had minimal residue.

At 400 miles my friend asked me to help him with his. His oil screen was full of lint and small particles of metal. His spinner had 10x the gunk that mine had.

My advice is to do it soon just to be on the safe side. I feel like my bike would have been fine but there's no way, owning multiple motorcycles, that I'd follow honda's oil schedule, especially after seeing my friend's spinner and screen at 400 miles. Just my .02.
