With the Grom being a toy I imagine a lot of us will fool around with it for a while and then park it back with the other toy bikes for the winter. The solution for extended storage according to the manual is disconnecting the battery, but how does this affect the electronic fuel injection? Does it re-learn fast? The manual mentions some sort of altitude reset so I fear it's might be many rides of learning that's lost every time the battery is disconnected, like some newer cars.

Or maybe a disconnect is realistically unneeded - has anyone measured the parasitic drain yet? I have no idea how much current bikes use to maintain their EFI memory and run the clock. (On cars it's generally <50 mA for everything incl. radio).

You don't really need to ride a bike very much in order to keep a new battery charged and the seals lubricated. Normally, a bike does not charge at idle, but slightly above idle, and a 10-min ride once a month will keep you going without a battery tender or winterizing the bike. Nothing wrong with using a battery tender though or even adding treatment to the gas for peace of mind. The battery tender would actually be better for longevity of the battery than only running the bike 10 min. a month too. The longest I've ever gone without riding in the last 4 years is 2 days though, so I don't use a battery tender or fuel additives. Plus winters are mild and it never gets below 40 F in my garage, so starting is always a breeze. Heat on the other hand is the problem in summer. The little Grom seems to take the heat very well though.

Sir are you BMW rider? Gold wing maybe? You are way over thinking this battery thing in a normal condition it will only discharge a very minimal amount according to Yuasa the battery manufacturer it will discharge 1/10 of 1 percent @ 90 degrees .if you disconnect it , it should be good for about a year. Put it on a trickle charger as for the fuel injection it resets it's self to a baseline every time it's started ( unless a code has been captured in the computer).

No it does not reset each time you turn it on. There is a reset but you have to jumper two wires and follow the procedure to reset the ECU.

oh and disconnecting the battery does not reset it either.

That bike does a system diagnostic when you arm it ( aka powering up the system when it is switched on with the key) that sir is fact . As for taking off the battery terminal , I have made no mention of that bad information in any statment ,why you seam to be lumping me with another poster.... I am unsure. Sir I encourage you to pump your brakes as you are coming out Guns a blazing on a friendly discussion in a forum. Where is your documentation to back up your matter of fact statement....

The service manual gives the procedure to reset the ECU, also gives the procedure to set it up for different altitudes. My source for my info is a Honda service manual. And your is that you think it resets because it cycles the LCD display so you can look for non-working cells. I'm not mad at you, your imagining that(much like your other info of the ECU reset). I'm just giving the starter of the thread the correct info that he asked for. Have a nice day.

Sir I have been working for a Honda, Kawasaki , Suzuki ,Ducati and Triumph dealer for 14 years and go to update training to be recertified every year, the training is extensive and is some off the best information I have been privey to learn, again you seam to have bad information I have made no mention of me thinking the system resets it self because of the speedo start up procedure of the speedo.....have I been to a class about a grom no , did you buy a helm manual (yes if your lucky)but you are entitled to your opinion ( and I have no problem making flat rate off you , after you fuck your machine up because you are a true shade tree mechanic) enjoy your service manual I hope it brings you many great reads on your toilet....)my garage is open to all and many ruckus owners have found great satisfaction with the help I've provided them, I'm not a expert .....just an enthusiast
peace

If you are making mention of the fact that I said to disconnect the battery so that it did not discharge, That's exactly what I said I did not say in any way that that would reset the computer

Well you might notice the 3 digit number on the plate of my bike in my avatar. That would be how my life time membership number ends. I quoted it in the link I posted. Not sure why your so mad and asking so many extra questions of me?

Original poster, starter of the thread, unhook your battery all you want you will be fine.

Quote please ...oh yeah you read it wrong and then got up on your soap box... Don't twist an ankle getting down... And trust me I'm not mad , just being clear on what I'm saying. I would still help you if you had a problem, but I don't know anything about dungeons and dragons

Turn ignition switch off, remove seat, remove DLC (Data Link Connector?) cover, short DLC terminals using the special tool (The pins to reset the ECU are attached to the Green and Blue wires on the harness. ) , open the throttle grip fully and hold, turn on ignition switch. The MIL light should come on and start blinking rapidly, with in 5 seconds after rapid blinking starts close the throttle grip and hold for more than 3 seconds.

There is part of it.
