was looking to buy a 2022, but wondering if this is a common problem. a decent amount of people in the YT comments seem to be having this issue.
looks like its happening after riding for a bit and in 4/5 gear

My Grom started doing the same noise today. I rode into town about 30 minutes. Then coming home it started making that exact noise. Did it for a couple of miles. I had to stop to come into the gate of our community and it stopped just as quick as it started.

My Grom is bone stock and only with les than 200 miles on it.

If it keeps it up, it will be back at the dealer.

Unfortunately, mine started this today. Around 50 miles on odometer. Same exact setup and symptoms. 20+minutes of riding without issue. Had a decently long run in 5th when I noticed it. Was not at WOT prior to issue. Noise stays until downshifting into 2nd. Doesn't return until I get into 5th again, but will stay until downshifting all the way to 2nd. Definitely transmission/clutch related. Not engine. Noise fluctuates with speed and gearing, not with engine RPMs.

I emailed my dealer about this and sent them the youtube clip to hear the sound. The owner of the dealer is a friend of mine and his son is head of sales and service, so I'm confident they will contact Honda about it to see what is going on with these. I can't imagine with all the units this seems to be happening with that Honda can pretend long that its not an issue.

Mine does the same thing with 700 miles on it. Dealer can't recreate noise.

I have the same problem, started from the first 300klm without going over 50klm or 5000...when i completed 2000klm and after 3 times to the mechanic without beliving me or result, i made a speed-test and i saw 130klm...when the sound began again, the best i had was 106klm...i got it from the mechanic today "again"(5th time) with all new inside the head of the motor...i wait to test it on Sunday again...if its not, probably its the trasmision...i dont know...i m goind to sell it if it wont be fixed...

Yup, I ride mine on the highway and I have this noise. It's so bad my friends can hear it from a long distance behind me. I don't think my dealer will want to fix it. They sold me the wrong oil filter for my first oil change and it destroyed the engine, they had to rebuild it. When I got it back the throttle cable was so tight it would hold wherever you left it. Obviously never got ridden after the rebuild. Then after that it started ticking like crazy, I took it back and they said some timing bolt was loose and had to be tightened. I'm scared to take it to them again :)

I think you are correct. I don’t think that is engine related. Definitely transmission/clutch. That noise is intense. I’m trying to think of how you could narrow down the cause. I’d be tempted to remove the clutch cover and take a look at the very least. The fact that it seems to begin after riding for a while, leads me to believe heat is involved. I wonder if the tolerance of something might be changing after heating up, causing some part to rub against something. Could there be a bad bearing? Like from a bad batch of bearings? I’m just tossing out ideas.

You might be waiting a while for Honda to figure it out and do something.

Can someone try to emulate the sound on a stand? Maybe ride until the sound starts, bring it back to your garage and get it started on the stand and up to 4th gear and let it sit up at 4-5k rpm... then you could use a stethoscope to atleast locate the noise better. 🤷‍♂️

i heard someone mention that theyre mechanic thought it was bearings on YouTube, and thought they were getting them replaced but havent heard back from it

I have had this noise once on my 22. At first I thought the chain was rubbing on metal like one of the chain guides came off or something. The more I listened and thought about it I figured it could be a bearing vibrating. I'm not sure how long a bearing would last making that kind of noise. It definitely does not sound good.

My one time experiencing this was under very light throttle in 3rd or 4th and when I downshifted and applied a handful of throttle it abated. I did notice that the noise did not change with the clutch pulled.

I have not reported mine to Honda as, like many others have found, they won't be able to replicate the noise. I am hoping, with time, the problem will be diagnosed and then I will repair it or have it repaired.

Seems like gromsquatch, I believe is his name, on YouTube has had it many times.

By the way, mine has about 700 miles on it. Motor and transmission are stock. Noise happened right after first oil change.
