Top 10 New Motorcycles Around $10,000

Oct 16, 2017 - 12:18 PM - by Motorcycle.com

I used to think 10 Big Ones was a lot of dough ítill I started pricing new pickup trucks. Now, I realize itís chicken feed. Let me eat cake. Sure, yes, I know there are great used bargains for half that much, but a private sellerís not going to give you a 1% APR for three years like Suzuki does, youíre not going to ride off on the shiniest, newest bike on the block, and you wonít have the inner warmth of knowing youíve done your part to stimulate the moto-economy.

Ask MO Anything: Is Clutchless Shifting Bad For My Transmission?

Oct 03, 2017 - 10:34 AM - by Motorcycle.com

Yes, itís all true. Well, it kind of depends on your bike. Some motorcycles with great big flywheels and big gears, like many Harleys and some BMW Boxers, need the clutch Ė or at least a little clutch Ė for nearly every shift. Most sportbikes only need you to use the clutch to pull away from stops and for the shift from first to second gear.

At slow, around-town speeds, we mostly use at least a little clutch to shift anyway; you donít need to pull the lever all the way in every time you use it. But if youíre steadily accelerating, and especially at WOT (wide open throttle), youíll find that after second gear, if you roll the throttle closed just enough to unload the driveline, for just a split second, with your toe pressing on the lever, then third gear will slip right in without using the clutch at all. Fourth, 5th and 6th will slip in even easier since the gaps between them are increasingly smaller. Done smoothly, itís no harder on your gearbox than using the clutch.

The Mad Bastard Scooter Rally Ė London Edition

Aug 23, 2017 - 2:15 PM - by Motorcycle.com

As I sit here just days following the Mad Bastard Scooter Rally, Iím finding it hard to put my thoughts and experiences down into words. Itís partially because this event was such a whirlwind that Iím still processing the madness of it all, and itís also because I feel like no words can possibly describe this event or do it any justice. You really have to experience it in person. For those of you who want to know more, Iím going to try to put this event, no wait, this experience, into enough words that will convince you it is something worth experiencing, and hopefully that will be enough for you to let go of your inhibitions, experience the unknown, and live life a little dangerously.

How can you live life dangerously on a scooter, you might ask? Well, when you are cruising on 50cc or maybe 110cc scooter on the side of the road with faster and larger vehicles whizzing past you, and a massive black vortex storm mass on your left, and after youíve been on the road for 17+ hours, you might begin to question your sanity and motives in life. I got home and shared the experience with my family, and their first question was, 'Why would you ever want to do this?'

Why not?

Top 10 Overlooked Maintenance Items

Jul 17, 2017 - 12:43 PM - by Motorcycle.com

Perhaps the motorcycle manufacturers are to blame. Theyíve made their products so reliable that we take them for granted. We almost feel that if we just keep our bikeís tank full and spoon new rubber on the rims when necessary, weíve got our machinery handled. Well, thatís not quite true, and consequently, many riders tend to overlook basic maintenance for extended periods. While lots of riders have the off-season in which they have the time away from riding to take care of annual upkeep, many little things need to be done on a regular basis throughout the riding season.
