    How much oil do you guys run??

    Just curious as to how much oil you guys run. I run ~ 1250ml of oil on my bike. thats ~ 150-350ml more than required (book claims .9L after draining or 1.1L after disassembly). This puts me about 3/8ths - 5/16ths of an inch above the full mark on the dipstick on my OG grom (stock side cover, with the dipstick at the back vs the newer one thats at the front).

    Reason for this is simply more oil capacity and to protect against oil starvation during wheelies / steep hill climbs. Never had an issue with excessive crank case pressure / oil mist blow by even on my BBK for extended high rpm rides, I simply have a longer vent line from stock location to a uni crank case breather.

    I’m curious to what how much oil people run with a kitaco side cover plus an oil cooler?
    2017 HONDA GROM.

    I have the Kitaco clutch cover -- no oil cooler. My engine is otherwise stock. I just pour an entire quart (.946 liters) bottle into the crankcase at every oil change. Based on the little glass window on the Kitaco clutch cover, that amount of oil appears to be a little bit high, but I surmise that I am still within tolerances. I have had no issues with just dumping the entire quart in with every oil change.

    I dont think the kitaco cover adds anything to the oil capacity. Id of bought one if it did

    1.2q is what I recommend running with my wheelie pumps. Mostly to help prevent starvation on steep down hills. My breather set up is still connected to the intake and it does ingest a bit of oil. Gonna install one of Kenny’s vented covers soon.

    i figured that, but once you add a cooler i would think you would have to have more volume of oil.

    Just take your external oil cooler before you mount it onto your grom, pour in oil until the other hose hole shows oil coming out. Take that oil that is in the oil cooler and pour it into a measurement cup to see how much extra oil is in the cup, add that oil amount to the 1qt you already installed into your grom and you should be good to go.

    The coolers themselves dont hold alot and if setup to where they dont drain when the motor is turned off then once you have it filled it doesnt matter you dont have to account for the change in volume due to the oil cooler.

    And then you leave dirty oil in the cooler? When I do an oil change I get a warm fuzzy feeling when all the oil is replaced.

    Well then, hold on to that warm fuzzy feeling, because unless you flush and drain the crankcase (which would be totally un- necessary), there is always a little bit of the “old” oil left in the engine during an oil change. This volume of residual oil is diluted with each oil change, and is generally considered to be of no significance.

    but if you are using an external oil cooler and you were really worried about it, you can always just disconnect one hose from the lower fitting on the oil cooler, and just let the oil drain out. No biggie either way.
