    Advice on acceleration mods

    Hi guys,

My grom goes about 55mph or so. This is fine for me though. I don't stunt it or race it or anything like that. Nor do I plan to do those things. But I would like it to accelerate more quickly and possibly have a higher top end. Maybe 60-65.

What would you recommend? BBK of some kind? I bought the Grom used, and it seems the previous owner had an AR exhaust. No other performance related mods have been installed. I am doing kitaco clutch cover and springs next week.

But what can I do to help it accelerate more quickly and have a little higher top end? What would you recommend?

To have both more top speed and more acceleration you'll surely need a BBK.

That exhaust is Chinese junk and probably hurting acceleration.

You can drop a tooth on the front sprocket and then get a long intake and better exhaust with fuel controller. There are low and cams as well. And you should still do 60MPH.

    You got me curious now.
Do you know which cam yields the best low end on the dyno?

The Yoshimura ST-1M is supposed to be a mid range cam which is why I bought one. Haven't installed it yet. The Kitaco Type 1 also claims mid range power.

Cameron Jones called the ST-1M a stinger's dream.

Is a 143cc reasonable enough? And if so, can I avoid the expense of the fuel controllers and such that I read about on the forums? Because of not, is there any reason to pick the 143 over something like a 181? What's the easiest installation wise?

I don't mind changing the exhaust. But I honestly would prefer something at the quieter end of the spectrum. I was looking around, but haven't found something that folks seem to agree is on the quieter side. Any insight there?

I don't know much about BBK so I'll bow out of that conversation. You will need a fuel controller or ECM flash with a BBK though. That's not an option.

Yoshimura RS-2 with baffle is the quietest that I'm aware of. I run it without baffle and really like it.

Hardracing recommended the takegawa cam, 14t sprocket, dyno jet pcv, oil pump, clutch cover, and intake. I'll try these and see how it goes.

    Thank you everyone!

The recommended the Takegawa cam? Interesting. Did they say if that has the most low-end to mid-range power?

I'm also surprised they recommended the old PCV over the newer and more capable PV3.

I think the 143 is what you're looking for. If you get all the mods you just listed plus the 143, it will definitely get you to what you want. I really like the Takegawa cam so far. It has good low to mid range punch. I can accelerate up a hill in 4th gear now.

In my 143 build I'm running an EFIE instead of a PCV. It may not be perfectly tuned, but it is keeping the AFR in a safe range. I can keep up with highway traffic too.
